Things You Can Do On Your Own
Avoid workplace surveillance with these tricks.
PLEASE NOTE: These tricks may not work with all bossware softwares or in all workplaces, however, these tactics have been used by workers in the past. Use this list as inspiration. These hacks are not protected and could lead to disciplinary action.
Virtual Machines/Running Multiple Applications
Virtual Machines can allow you to do things on your computer that are not tracked by the software.
Think of virtual machines as having two computers but instead of physically having another computer, you can have two computers on your one laptop or PC for free! This can help avoid tracking because one “computer” can be used for work activities and personal activities can be done on the other “computer”.

Running multiple applications at once can look like work to a monitoring software, even if you are reading the news, playing video games, or just relaxing.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
VPNs or virtual private networks is a service that creates a secure connection between your device and a network that can mask some of your activities. They can make it more difficult for your workplace to trace your device, identity, and personal information.

Tracking Your Employer or Yourself
Tracking your employers or yourself can help you regain power. This can look like recording conversations, keeping track of your activities, or setting up a camera to prove you are working.
AVOID: peer monitoring; wraps employees into this very surveillance architecture established by employers.
There have been many successful examples of workers tracking their employer:
- Starbucks employees recorded a conversation with their boss which resulted in termination. However, this activity was ruled as being protected by the National Labor Relations Board.
- Shipt workers gathered data on their work and with researchers and organizers audited the app's algorithm.
